Where Science Comes From. Moving Your Life Forward Using Power of Discovery.
Dear Friend,
As you probably know, the progress of science hasn’t necessarily come from scientists figuring everything out by themselves. There have been many times when discoveries were made after a scientist had given up on a problem or had stopped thinking about it for a while.
These discoveries have been arrived at through serendipity or ‘lucky chance’.
An example is the mRNA vaccines produced by Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna that saved, probably, millions of lives during the COVID pandemic.
Compared to traditional vaccines, mRNA vaccines have the advantage of speed of development. This is crucial when there’s a race against time to protect people against a fast-spreading deadly disease.
Their other advantage is easy adaptability. This is important for quickly switching up to tackle new viral variants. With traditional vaccines this is a longer-winded process involving going back to the starting blocks, in effect.
Dr Katalin Kariko, who won the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology / Medicine for her breakthrough research on mRNA had faced significant hurdles to success.
For decades, she couldn’t get the funding at the University of Pennsylvania, where she worked, to study mRNA. In 1995, she was demoted and the science community largely forgot about mRNA therapy.
She nevertheless persevered privately and eventually discovered, with a colleague, Drew Weismann, how to modify mRNA to prevent severe inflammatory reactions. It was that discovery that made mRNA vaccines possible, more than 15 years later.
Who could have known?
The knowledge about everything it seems, already exists somewhere and Nature occasionally raises her veil to give a glimpse.
On a more mundane note, you can use this to get guidance and solutions to day-to-day questions you have about anything by allowing yourself to become thoughtless.
Whenever you’re feeling stuck in a rut, this is how you can move your life forward. More below.
