Love Your Guts. Birthing a Better World.
Dear Friend,
Your mental health, mood, and maladies are influenced by the health of your gut, so if you pay attention to your gut, it becomes a path to inner peace.
In yoga iconography, your gut is ruled by Vishnu, who incarnates in the throat as Krishna and ultimately in the brain as Virata.
This iconography represents a codified knowledge of actual human biological processes and when translated into science, explains the gut-brain axis.
Due to the density of nerve cells in the gut, it has been described as ‘the second brain’ and is linked to your actual brain by an information ‘super-highway’ called the Vagus nerve, which passes through the throat.
Almost 95% of your body’s ‘happy hormone’, serotonin, is produced in the gut, which is why mental health conditions, such as anxiety and depression, have been linked to gut health.
Your gut health is determined by the relative balance of ‘good bacteria’ (anti-inflammatory) and ‘bad bacteria’ (pro-inflammatory) in your microbiome.
As your Vishnu tattwa (principle) improves through daily meditation on your Nabhi chakra, so does your gut health. This because the subtle (vibes) always supports the gross (physiology).
The shakti (feminine energy) of Vishnu is Lakshmi who is the source of ‘kalyana’ , meaning peace, prosperity and well-being.
The meditative peace felt in your Nabhi (gut) produces a similar effect in your communications with others (throat) and gives you a peaceful mental outlook on things generally(brain).
Through a multiplier effect acting through the people you come into contact with, this peace could extend to the whole world. Which is why loving your guts contributes to making the world a better place. More below.
