Riddled with Debt? Money You Owe link to Egyptian Sphinx.

Once upon a time, according to the ancient texts of India, a cruel demon-king, called Hiranyakashipu ruled a kingdom that included part of present-day Egypt.
By ritual magic he had sought immortality in order to rule forever. But having been denied this by divine law, decided to achieve immortality by other means.
So, instead he asked for the power of not being killed, but sealed the deal with air-tight sub-clauses that a contracts lawyer would be proud of.
He obtained the power that no man or beast could kill him; that he couldn’t be killed at night or during the day-time; that he couldn’t be killed inside a building or outside a building; that he could not be killed on the ground or in the air; and that he could not be killed by any weapon.
But Hiranyakashipu hadn’t reckoned on the mischief that blood relatives can sometimes create.
He had a son named Prahlada who had absolutely no interest in following in the family business. On the contrary, Prahlada was the number one fan of the god Vishnu, whom Hiranyakashipu considered an arch-enemy.
Frustrated by this mis-directed allegiance of his son, Hiranyakashipu threatened and angrily mocked Prahlada one day while he was meditating on Vishnu.
It was twilight (neither day or night). Then suddenly emerging from a pillar in the doorway (neither inside or outside a building)) was this strange and terrific hybrid figure of a man in it’s lower half and a lion in it’s upper half (neither man nor beast), which was Narasimha (man-lion), an incarnation of Vishnu.
Narasimha grabbed the bewildered demon-king and placing him on its lap (neither in the air or on ground) ripped open his Nabhi with its claws (no weapons), killing him instantly. Prahlada was consequently freed.
In memory of the slain Hiranyakashipu, his former subjects (Assyrians / Asuras) erected a defiant protest monument which was the reverse of Narasimha, having the top half human and the bottom half as a lion. This figure we’ve come to know as the Sphinx of Egypt.
In India, Narasimha is primarily remembered in a stotra (sung mantra) for debt-relief, both financial and karmic, called the Runa Vimochana Narasimha Stotram, which includes the Sanskrit refrain:
Shri Narasimha, maha-viryam, namaami runa muktaye
(meaning: mighty, Narasimha, release me from my debts)
This chant might catch on across the UK, where, according to the most recent Bank of England consumer credit report, we owe a total of £82 billion on credit cards.
We’re also on the hook for money owed on bank overdrafts, student loans, personal loans, car finance, buy-now-pay-later, hire purchase and mortgages.
It’s not just individuals. Governments around the world are also increasingly indebted due to having to borrow money (by issuing bonds) to close the gap between tax receipts and public expenditure. As this IMF blog post shows, the Global economy runs on debt.
This might be Hiranyakashipu’s revenge. By taking the role of Mammon (‘can’t serve two masters’) to ‘keep ‘em busy’. The bulk of humanity is so involved in their subsistence, that nobody has the time or inclination to ‘meditate on Vishnu’, which is the vital evolutionary need of the times (Your Need for Speed 16/12/2024).
