Meeting Your Needs. How to Hack Maslow’s Pyramid.

Dear Friend,

If your HR department didn’t include something about Maslow’s pyramid during your induction when you first joined the company, here’s all you need to know about it:

You’ve got needs
Satisfying these needs is what motivates you
Your needs range from basic ones like food and shelter, right through to love and belonging and ultimately, ‘self-actualization’
You only pursue a higher need when a lower one has been satisfied, so your needs can be stacked one on top of each other in the shape of a pyramid to form a hierarchy

This theory of human motivation was formulated by the American psychologist, Abraham Maslow, for whom the pyramid is named after.

What Maslow missed out however is that life can be a lottery and reaching the top of the pyramid is not guaranteed.

It’s possible to get stuck at a lower level, while failing to achieve satisfaction.

Here’s your hack or ‘get out clause’ to Maslow’s pyramid:

In the yoga literature (Lalita Sahasranama) one of the names of your kundalini is ‘purushartha pradayini’ meaning, ‘She who achieves for you the four aims of life’
These four aims are: dharma ( peace & equanimity), kama (love, pleasure & enjoyment), artha (wellbeing & prosperity), moksha ( spiritual freedom)

Your daily kundalini meditation then becomes a way of achieving all other life needs as a by-product your inner work with yoga. More below.

The hack to Maslow’s pyramid is essentially to achieve the top of the pyramid first ie. self-actualisation/ self-realisation and then by a ‘trickle-down’ effect automatically have all lower needs satisfied. In the Bhagavad Gita, this is described as ‘yoga kshema vahamyam’ (‘first, achieve yoga and then your wellbeing is looked after’). Is it true that regularly listening to Indian classical music can cure certain illnesses?

Reply:

There’s a whole body of ancient Indian knowledge called ‘Raga Chikitsa’ that suggests that certain melodic structures (ragas) can have a balancing and harmonising effect on the subtle body (sukshma sharira), thereby leading to the relief of certain illnesses.

For example, Raga Bhimpalasi is said to be good for your Nabhi chakra and so could be effective for any digestive complaints and for increasing your sense of well-being.

The performance of Raga Bhimpalasi that I listen to is this beautiful rendition by the Kishori Amonkar.

Each Raga has a ‘Samay’ or time of day when it works the best. For Raga Bhimpalasi, the samay is early afternoon between 12pm - 3pm.
