Combating Depression & Anxiety. Why Happiness is in Your Belly (Laughing Buddha). Dear Friend,
Depression is big business.
When I worked in Big Pharma, millions of dollars of research money was being poured into SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) or antidepressants.
It's easy to see why. According to a World Health Organisation(WHO) 2017 report, 322 million people world-wide were living with depression.
This figure has risen significantly since the pandemic.
More patients means more antidepressant prescriptions. It's just as well that there are other ways, apart from medication, of combating depression (and anxiety).
These include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Interpersonal psychotherapy.
But recently there's started to be a shift in the understanding of what causes depression and therefore how better to treat it.
Depression, according to Joanna Moncrieff, a professor at UCL, is not actually due to a deficiency of the 'happy hormone', serotonin.
So antidepressants are not the answer. Plus they come with undesirable side-effects such as addiction.
Instead, there's now evidence that the gut microbiome (good bacteria that helps to breakdown organic waste) can trigger depression.
To keep your gut bacteria happy and stave off depression may be about getting the right kind of fibre in your diet.
Science sometimes takes a detour before arriving at was is already known in yoga. There's a reason why the laughing buddha is depicted with a generous belly.
This is why your Nabhi chakra is key to your happiness and wellbeing. More below.
