Controlling Your Monkey Mind. How Rumination Makes You Age Faster.

Controlling Your Monkey Mind. How Rumination Makes You Age Faster.

Dear Friend,

If you google for photos of US presidents before and after they held office, the weight of the office shows you what it can do to the face.

Obama's relatively fresh and youthful appearance at inauguration makes a contrast to the greyer version of himself by the time he left office. The same with other occupants of the Oval office.

This speeded up ageing may not just be due to the burden of responsibility for making decisions affecting millions of people. It could also be due to the inevitable rumination that goes with it.

Rumination is when you turn something over and over in your head to the point where it becomes a habitual way of thinking.

This is a version of 'monkey mind' or 'wandering mind' which we can all find ourselves doing. Some people more than others.

It is rumination that has been shown to age people faster.

In research carried out by Elizabeth Blackburn, the molecular biologist and biochemist, and Elissa Epel, the health psychologist,  they found a direct link between rumination and the quicker shortening of DNA telomeres which are a marker for ageing.

What Elizabeth Blackburn also demonstrated was the positive correlation between meditation and the preservation of your telomeres.

If Mother Nature wanted to upgrade human beings to a version that didn't grow old or get sick, the first thing she'd probably do is make meditation as easy as breathing.

A very good candidate for that would be the Kundalini meditation you're doing daily now. More below.

Also below: Feel better faster by looking after your feet; and, how not to let things get to you with work.

Best wishes

P.

Hydrotherapy  - The Importance of Looking After Your Feet.
As a reflexologist might tell you, how well you look after your feet can make a big difference to how well you feel overall. This is because, according to TCM (traditional Chinese medicine), your whole body along with all your internal organs are mapped to your feet. The Sahaja yoga way of looking after your feet is by using hydrotherapy in the form of a regular Footspa. Here's the guide...
Avoiding Burnout - The Power of the Middle Way ( a Meditation).
Prevention is better than cure. At the first sign that things are beginning to drain you physically and emotionally, you can prioritize your wellbeing with this short meditation which pulls you back into your center and re-balances you.  Your center yoga channel, the Sushumna, represents the power of the 'middle way'.
How to Manage a Wandering Mind and Break the Cycle of Negative Thinking.
If you ever find yourself trapped in a cycle of negative thinking, then use it as motivation to develop your ability to go thoughtless. Every time the thought comes into your head, say: 'not this, not this'. What you are in effect telling yourself is that your thoughts are not reality. Mind is myth as Shri Mataji explains here...

Quote of the Week

"First of all, I have to tell you, the mind about which we speak and depend upon is a myth. There’s nothing like mind. Brain is reality, not the mind. Mind is created by us reacting to outside, either we react to conditionings or to our ego. Thus, this mind is created like bubbles on the ocean of reality, but that’s not reality.
So one has to decide what to do, how to be out of this trap of our mind. Kundalini is the solution. When She’s awakened  She takes you beyond your mind

The weight of a person's past can sometimes act as a drag on forward movement or progress.

In yoga, our past is 'stored' in our ida nadi (left subtle channel) which also represents the subconscious and emotional memory.

It is difficult to directly address issues in the subconscious, particularly relating to past trauma. However, a 'treatment' that usually produces good results is, what is referred to in India, as the 'Matka Treatment'.

This is essentially a 'lemon and chilli detox' of the subconscious and strange as it may sound, many people have vouched for its success.

Here's a guide to doing the 'Matka Treatment'

Body Tuning. How to Heal Yourself with Music.

Achieving Your Health, Wealth & Happiness By 10-Minutes Daily Thoughtless Awareness.

Body Tuning. How to Heal Yourself with Music.

Dear Friend,

Your body is like a musical instrument. When you're in tune you feel great. When you're not in tune, you don't.

Not being in tune is the basis of every ailment and to cure it you need the resonating power of sounds, of musical notes.

Unfortunately, as much as you may enjoy your Spotify playlist, it's unlikely to be doing much for you at a deeper, therapeutic level.

Indian classical music, on the other hand, is tailor-made to sort you out if you need it.

The reason Indian classical music can have a powerful therapeutic effect is because, according to the ancient Indian seers, it originates from the primordial sound of the universe.

That sound is AUM.

AUM is also the subtle sound made by your kundalini in her spiral movement from the base of your spine to the crown of your head.

The seven chakras of your body correspond to the seven notes of the musical scale. And it is your kundalini that knows how to play them.

When you listen to Indian classical music it resonates harmoniously with your subtle body.

Through this it's possible to get relief from anxiety and depression, throat problems, stomach problems and a host of other problem. More below.

Also below: feeling good from oil massaging your hair; and, building up your resilience by focusing on your 'root support' (Mooladhara).

Best wishes

Shiro Abhayangam - Ayurvedic Head Massage for Total Relaxation.
In yoga, your 'sukshma sharira' or subtle body is like an upside-down tree. The branches stretch downwards into the body and the roots are in the brain. This means that all your chakras have their roots in your Sahasrara (crown of head). This is why an oil massage of your head can be very therapeutic. This is very well understood in Ayurvedic medicine and is called 'Shiro Abhayangam', which looks and feels like this...
Building Your Resilience - A Mantra Meditation on Mooladhara Chakra .
Life ain't a sprint; it's a marathon. Your resilience is expressed through the mooladhara chakra from where your strength and stability also come from. Build yourself up with regular use of this mantra meditation on your mooladhara chakra...
Raga - How What You Listen To Affects You.
The therapeutic power of Indian classical music lies in the Ragas, which are precise melodic structures which carry a 'mood' and are tied to the time of day, referred to as a 'samay'. The charts here show you what ragas correspond to which chakras  and also the musical instrument  that a chakra is most affected by. With the benefit of this knowledge you can now create a Spotify playlist that does wonders for you.

Quote of the Week

"Indian classical music was based on AUM (primordial sound). At different times, certain music (melody)/ 'raga') should be played which describes a mood. Your Kundalini moves with the 'sapta swaras' ( the 7 notes from which melody/ raga is created). These seven swaras are built in your seven chakras. There was knowledge of exact swaras which would really make you feel nice. "

What I want to know is why are there hurdles to anything I'm trying to do? Nothing ever seems to run smoothly.
In Reply:

There are two positive ways of looking at hurdles, which, by the way, everyone experiences.

The first is that hurdles are a form of resistance-training that makes you stronger in order for you to overcome them.

The second is that hurdles can act as a guide for changing course. Be like water, which follows the line of least resistance.

Nature is always effortless.

From a yoga perspective, it's a fact of life that there are hurdles and obstacles in everything we try to do. This is why Shri Ganesha, the deity of your first chakra (Mooladhara) is regarded as especially important.

Shri Ganesha is known as 'the remover of obstacles' and is represented by the OM placed in front of every mantra.

The mantra is like an arrow aimed at a target and the OM is so that it hits its target.

Regularly listen to the powerful Shri Ganesha Artharvarsheersha Mantra in your morning meditation to make your day rum smoother.
